POLICY Marathon redistribution of the regions is at an end …
The parliament adopted Wednesday a final vote of the Assembly the new map of France in 13 regions despite the vehement anger always UMP Alsatian against the merger of their region with Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine.
The reform, which will come into force early 2016, was intended by François Hollande in order to redraw France for several decades with regions “European size” and drivers of economic development.
In a final vote, MEPs adopted text by 95 votes for, 56 against and 11 abstentions. The Left Front, the radical left, environmentalists, the UMP and the UDI voted overwhelmingly against “forced consolidation”, while the Socialists have voted for it.
Six months of debate
After six months of debate and three readings in each room, so this is the vision of the Socialist Group in the Assembly that has emerged where the government had proposed 14 regions where the Senate wanted 15 instead of the current 22.
If it is not “perfect”, this card “has its coherence”, welcomed the Minister of the Interior, Bernard Cazeneuve.
In a statement, President Francois Hollande welcomed the final adoption of the text, which “will allow the establishment on 1 January 2016 13 regions that have the size to carry large projects and to ensure better service to citizens. “
The new card merges with Alsace Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne, Nord-Pas-de-Calais with Picardy and Midi-Pyrenees with Languedoc-Roussillon, three contested mergers, especially the first one. Other groups were less controversial (Poitou-Charentes and Limousin with Aquitaine, Burgundy and Franche-Comté, Rhône-Alpes Auvergne with) and even enthusiastic (both Normandy).
