The number of dead on routes of France recorded a strong increase of 10.7% in November, with 279 people killed against 252 in November 2013, announced Monday the interministerial National Observatory of Road safety (ONISR). The year 2014 will be the first year of increase in road deaths after twelve years of decline or stagnation.
“Compared with the first eleven months of 2013, the road accidents recorded indicators in 2014 an increase of + 5% of people killed, 2.6% of injured, 3.6% of people hospitalized, “said ONISR in a statement. If the number of fatalities increased in November 2014 compared to November 2013, the number of injury accidents remained stable (+ 0.2% with 4,999 cases).
Figures “concern” for the Interior Ministry
“This November confirms the trend of recent months, namely, an increase in mortality vulnerable road user s such as pedestrians, + 15%, cyclists, 5%, and moped riders, 9%, “said the Observatory. The November figures were described as “worrying” by the Ministry of the Interior, in a statement.
Many road safety measures, the content is unknown yet but should concern “Speed, alcohol, drugs, use of mobile devices” will be announced in January by the Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve to halt the rise in road deaths. The minister said however that a general decline in the speed limit of 90 km / h to 80 km / h on two-way roads recommended by the National Road Safety Council (NSRC) was excluded. This limitation will be tested on a few sections.
In the first eleven months of the year, 3103 people died on the roads of France. The government posted a 2000 goal of reducing the number of deaths per year on the road in 2020. It was 3250 in 2013, a record low.
