The two men who escaped from the prison of Saint-Martin-de-Ré this morning were arrested shortly before noon by the police. They fled on foot and were stopped a few hundred meters from the prison.

They escape with the help of a rope
The prosecutor of the Republic of La Rochelle, Isabelle Pagenelle, said the two men had briefly detained an officer of the institution with which they were working for maintenance and maintenance tasks. They tried to elicit the key of his car but the officer refused to give them. The two detainees were then fled on foot after scaling the perimeter wall of the prison with a rope . They were intercepted by the police in the parking lot of a supermarket in St-Martin-de-Ré, near the plant.
Incarcerated 2030 and 2029
The facts occurred in the part of prison installed on the side of the citadel. Representatives guards unions point out this morning that the two men sentenced to very long sentences should not have to be in this part of the prison which they say is located closer to the exit.
Significant resources were deployed research this morning on the island. The security forces cordoned off the island by installing filter dams on the bridge which led to major traffic jams on the main roads. The police were inspecting all vehicles leaving the island.
Inmates were placed in custody and charged with escape. The two men were serving very long sentences in prison and had Ré out in 2029 and 2030, one of them would be convicted pedophile and one for drug cases.
Difficult to escape to an island
The prison of St-Martin-de-Ré is the largest home central France, about 500 detainees have been held there. It is housed in an old fortress built by Vauban in the late seventeenth century. Formerly, the convicts bound for Cayenne there were locked.
Other breakouts have occurred in the past even though the fact that the prison is built on an island makes it more difficult to escape. The last date of June 2013 but only lasted an hour and a half. The longer the run the years of 2005, an inmate escaped May 23, 2005 and managed to get out of the island. He was caught on August 26 in Lourdes .
In July 2004, another escapee was resumed after 48 hours of the run while trying to flee the island by swimming.
