The conference on student assessment organized on 11 and 12 December with expert testimony and innovative teachers was an initiative launched by the predecessor of Ms Vallaud-Belkacem, Benoît Hamon, in the wake of the law on rebuilding the Vincent Peillon school that advocates a “benevolent assessment.” The jury of the conference, composed half of users of education and half professionals, however, does not retain the phrase “benevolent,” warned the president, physicist Stephen Klein. “For reasons that are beyond us, it has become the public eye” synonymous with “loss of demand,” he said, facing criticism accusing the department of trying to “break the thermometer.” He promised the search for a “balance” between measures “too revolutionary” and measures “too much in line with what exists.” The jury should recommend that during their training, teachers are aware of the bias in the evaluation demonstrated by research. The challenge according to experts is how we perceive as and when learning if students have actually acquired what was expected of them and the points on which they must make progress, an actual assessment “formative” where the error may be part of the process.
