Married life: new trends – TF1

While living in pair without being married in the 1950s was frowned upon, new patterns of life together have emerged since. Cohabitation, concubinage or the PACS, introduced in 1991, have grown significantly. INED has just published the results of its investigation “The first partnership: Recent Developments” conducted among 7825 women and men aged 26-65 years. The institute was interested in how new generations lived their first cohabiting couples experience, compared to their elders.

The median age at which one moves for the first time with his partner, 22.8 years for women and 25.8 years for men, stabilized following a long period of decline. “Half of the men and women born in the early 1950s had already lived a married life respectively 21.6 years and 23.2 years,” says the study.

Moving and commitment

It is rare to settle for two in a new home before. If 67% of men and women born in the 50s did, they were only 50% for those born in the 80s, it is common for women born around the 80s moved into accommodation of their spouse, we count on a 4. conduct attributed to prolonged education for women delaying entry into the labor market and therefore of life couple.

Moving couple does not mean Wedding so far. “The first couple formation, which often emerges today as people are at the design stage, and is increasingly taking the form of an experiment of a way of life, and enrolled fewer and least possible prospect of marriage and family formation “says sociologist Wilfried Rault.

later Marriage

The marriage occurs more and later. “In the generations born between 1953 and 1957, most people were already married at age 30 (74% of women and 66% of men), or even to 25 years (64% and 4%). Among those born a quarter of a century later (1978-1982), only 16% of women and 7% of men were married 25 years. ” the study reveals.
