The former Green MEP and figure of the student movement of May 68 Daniel Cohn-Bendit said Saturday at AFP have obtained French nationality, confirming press reports, ensuring not having requested for political purposes.
“Now I have the Franco-German dual national” s’ welcomed Mr Cohn-Bendit, reached by telephone. “In Germany I was the French the Germans in France the most German of French,” said he said. Also his dual nationality “suits my identity, my mindset,” he added.
As a French citizen, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, 70, could theoretically wear presidential candidate in 2017. “I know that people pile planning any political maneuvering, but it is not at all in my head,” he has told AFP. “All the presidential candidates can rest easy!” Was it fun.
Born in 1945 in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne) hidden German-Jewish parents in France because of Nazi persecution Daniel Cohn-Bendit has remained stateless until 1959 before choosing German citizenship to escape the French military service.
On 21 May 1968, “Dany the Red” was the subject of a French territory expulsion decree from the Minister of the Interior for “disturbing public order” during the student protests which he was one of the iconic leaders. Ironically, Friday is the Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve who called to announce the granting of French nationality, said Mr Cohn-Bendit.
