The Assize Court of Yvelines sentenced this Friday, a man of 51 years to twelve years’ imprisonment for throwing on hydrochloric acid ex-wife, who for this incident kept irreversible damage. This condemnation is, imposes a permanent ban from French territory and reimbursement of 20,000 euros to the victims of the guarantee fund.
The Algerian was also found guilty of harassing the victim by phone and degraded his vehicle. “I recognize the SMS and phone calls. I’m sorry”, said the accused, speaking with the help of an interpreter, before the jury retires to deliberate. “I have nothing to do with the rest,” he had said.
An abuser “possessed by the devil”
In fact, throughout the investigation and trial , which started on Wednesday, he had held not to be the aggressor, however giving shifting and contradictory versions. He had first ensured that he went to the facts of the evening hospital for a medical examination which had not finally taken place and claimed that he had paid an intermediary for that “disfigures lifetime” the victim because he was “possessed by the devil” before retracting. At the hearing, he again blamed the intermediary, who was not prosecuted and denied ordering the attack, recounted the defense lawyers and civil party.
The events occurred on the night of 9 to 10 September 2011, around 2am. On return from work, the victim had entered the lobby of his building of Mantes-la-Jolie (Yvelines) when a man hidden under a hood had advanced to her to launch her to face acid. The woman, aged 46 at the material time, lost the use of his left eye and still suffers from an “important psychological trauma”.

Soon, the victim, who has not seen his assailant, and its families, guided investigators to the accused, she religiously married in April and quickly left. The investigation revealed that the suspect sent him some 154 SMS, some threatening, but found no evidence of either his presence there at the relevant time nor the veracity of his alibi.
