Since the birth of “Night Stand”, Gaël Brustier daily visits Republic Square. By dint of hearing Eric Zemmour, Nicolas Sarkozy or even Florian Philippot accuse these participants to have “nothing in the brain” , to be a “pustule fascist” or even to be there for that to “smoking marijuana” , this political scientist wished to decipher the genesis of a movement that challenges the French company for more than a month. In this brilliant book, Brustier offers a new reading grid to understand this civic movement that transcends classes and parties.
Why write a book just one month after the birth of Night Stand? Did you have the feeling that some of the French passed next to the understanding of this phenomenon?
Gaël Brustier – This test is born after a sleepless night to follow the launch of Night standing via social networks. I had not manifested March 31 against the reform of the labor code … But I have followed closely the launch of Night standing overnight in via social media a few weeks prior, I had echo in project discussions with people involved in the preparation. I quickly understood the social genesis of the movement. It was originally designed and built by intellectuals and experienced campaigners. But I wanted to distinguish the different nuclei of organization and the original matrix that allowed the blossoming of Night standing. I had so much said and written that the great Holland five years of the protest movement had been conservative with the Manif to everyone that I could not refrain from dealing with this new phenomenon to see if the rightward of the country was an inevitable factor or not.
is it not surprising to see a movement like standing Night emerge even as we are in a period of ideological stiffening and mounted conservative ideas?
Several surveys have shown that there was a “rightward” of French public opinion but it is also confirmed at the European level, the recent elections in Germany or Austria are proof. But most companies are challenging the soft consensus “neoliberal” we have known for 30 years. That is true with Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour Party or even with Bernie Sanders in the Democratic camp. It also takes the form of Podemos in Spain or a little less successful in some other countries. The five year term of Francois Hollande is carnage to the left as a whole structurally and left in this country has become a minority. Night stand is an attempt, which may appear desperate to reset this political camp. Night Stand is the fruit of all the defeats of the left and beyond the theater of operations is chosen the heart of Paris. The districts of III, X and XI, are those of the Paris gentrified, three of the six who were conquered by the left in 1995.
What made her political emergence possible today?
Search the desperate people , the book I wrote with Jean-Philippe Huelin, in 2009, we said told the day that precarious intellectuals would wake up being able to universalize their speeches a new political process would be possible. We saw the beginnings saw Republic Square and it was interesting to see if the movement standing Night was able to respond to territorial and social fragmentation of the country. Whether the insurgency was coming. I was not too surprised by the evolution of the movement. For cons, I was surprised to see that the participants of Night standing were quickly aware of what they were trying to achieve immediate and limits to their action.
A right, some observers speak of Night standing as a “ media creation” that would respond to an ideological and social proximity.
I think that within editorial, Night stand divided. Like everywhere. Young journalists who visit the Republic Square are not necessarily always themselves in unison with the editorial defended their media. As the media are among the most insecure occupations, public is massively present in the early days of the Republic Square. There may have been a media magnifying effect but it seems to be a just reward. For a long time the media have removed the workers from their screens and spoke only from the consensual society from the heart of our cities. Today the social conflict is invited in this consensus society.
In your book you just explain that contrary to popular stereotypes, social conflicts have not disappeared from urban centers and that what is happening today Republic square is the “ theater par excellence of the opposition between the children of educated middle classes and graduate classes, unlike the first, yet enjoy the benefits of the globalization “.
This is the revolution in a silent revolution. The post-materialist values are offset since 2008 that the youth of Europe really pays effects of the crisis. It plays a key role in triggering and location of this movement. Precarious intellectuals who constitute the bulk of the troops landed from the gates of Paris or the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, which are marked by real disparities compared to other Parisian districts.
Is Do you think that François Ruffin just sees when he says that victory will necessarily involve “the alliance of the working classes and the middle classes.”
Ruffin has always sought with his band, the reconquest of the popular classes. They do not develop the idea that to succeed politically must do “half Mélenchon” and “Half The Pen”. Ie half-statism and half racism. It has a strong reflection (his small book on Gramsci published in November demonstrates) and proven militant practice. It has the effect of mastering both the World universe that Diplo Picardy birthplace Fakir. However the gate of class analysis is less efficient today. The legacy of the workers’ movement so important and respectable as it is, lets not talk to as many as say … Frédéric Lordon, the first night that “what unites us is the wage system” is not necessarily consider other truths of French society and is to refer to images and share repositories that exist but can no longer apply to all society, at least in all that we hear together the famous “99%” Occupy Wall Street. Proof by the number of people who are not employees of the Place … The very name of “convergence of struggles” is quite old and will not allow the emergence of a type of movement Podemos . I think we can not produce a new political movement with old code, or by evading the obligation to articulate verticality and horizontality. We must preserve but articulate to other potentially more widespread.
What would it take for you?
To unify a large number of applications social, we must rethink develop new forms of activism. Today, union activism and politics is less obviously present debates of Night standing questions about the renewal of popular education for example. In addition, build a new unifying discourse, which is not a simple call with a red flag waved in the wind, is at the heart of everything …
The withdrawal of the law El KOMRI you parait- it enough unifier?
This is the heart of everything but it does not summarize the truth of Night standing. The request to withdraw the bill is both the trigger and the way to reach very different populations. It is a widespread impression and qualitative which is to say: “We are tired of this society where nothing has meaning, where it has taken over our future” Some forms of modern society organization are challenged. Night stand is a movement that goes from an industrial society to imaginary concerns of a post-industrial society. This is what makes it unique as …
Is Night standing a direct result of great hope disappointed that represented Syriza?
C is a movement born of all the defeats of the left for thirty years: ideological, political, cultural. It is also the consequence of a particular political context. The year 2015 was a year of acceleration of ideological divisions in Europe. The failure of Alexis Tsipras in negotiating with the “partners” Europe and the failure of the alternative left in local elections in 2015 was a moment of acute awareness outlet. It was the start of the decision. He had to do something. Many people looking for what to do? In this environment there in civil society. The question that arose was “what to do to stop this disaster?” . They tried …
How to explain that this experience be nourished by the failure of Alexis Tsipras?
I think Tsipras has made it clear to the radical left that his idea of reorienting Europe left was not possible. Through practice, he showed that when we want to lead a radical left politics in Europe, we face the reality of the institutional wall. This was a heavy defeat, a major disappointment … So far the radical left had always denied that the container and the contents were not embedded in the European construction and had never wanted to see that i had two sovereignties that overlapped. This is a major challenge to renew a positive review of Europe …
The Night movement standing can it be recovered politically?
No, not bother to poke Republic to try to recover them because they hate any form of verticality. Many are followers so-called “liquid democracy” as the movements that can bind to mind “pirates.” That adds up to very generational concerns for digital freedoms, open data etc …
Who can bring these claims politically?
C ‘ is a social movement, civic, ideas. It brews a lot of very different ideas … There are plenty of people who go there with the aim of debating. They sit down and exchange ideas on popular education or even the white vote. There is a real intellectual expansion with over 80 workshops. For many, the issue of changing the world does not yet pose because they want already understand. There have been many since March 31 to come and listen …
How to explain the outburst
right and the extreme right against the motion standing Night?
the figure of the “bobo” has become a repulsive face over the years to the right and the extreme right. The right and the extreme right are riding it to make a scarecrow to frighten and mobilize their electorate. Anti-intellectualism diffused in France, paroxysmal when it comes to disqualify people “who have time to talk and not have to work a lot” now usual catchphrase …
are you not afraid of writing this book too quickly and miss its possible evolution?
I heard at length television days or Twitter saying that Night activists were standing “morons” or people who were useless. People who are allowed to have a lapidary judgment of this movement 140 characters can not blame me for having spent days and sleepless nights to write this book. This is not a plea for standing Night is a perspective, to explain what they are fruit, what they reveal about our society …
Think you know that the movement can stop quickly?
There is no reason that the movement stops suddenly before the summer. After I am not soothsayer but I think the debates in the National Assembly around the El KOMRI law can serve as an impetus to talk of the movement. I hear that standing Night is not a mass movement opposed to May 68 and indeed it does not extend to small industrial towns. Personally I think that the social geography is no longer even in 68; political and trade union organizations have at all the same weight, we know. The union commitment rate or not political. It’s much more complicated to bring out a mass movement in a society like ours that night especially standing from a specific subject (law KOMRI El) was necessary but can not agglomerate all social anger or aspirations from the country. Basically, if you want to cause some useful discussion, we can probably say that Night Stand is the first post-Marxist social movement …
