In the capital of Northern Ireland, the results reflect the community separations. Irish nationalists associated with the Catholic community, are in favor of maintaining the European Union, to maintain ties with the neighboring Republic of Ireland.
The Unionists, associated with the Protestant community, are supporters of a “Brexit” by alliance with the Conservative Party, and sense of belonging to a sovereign Britain.
The riding Belfast West, nationalist bastion, voted overwhelmingly for the “Remain” (74.1%). Like the districts of Belfast South (69.5%) and North Belfast (50.4%). However, East Belfast, Unionist stronghold, voted for the “Leave”, to 51.9%.
On Twitter, the Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein welcomed the results. If “Brexit”, the movement had threatened to call a referendum on an eventual reunification with the Republic of Ireland.
