Gérard Larcher beat the Socialist Didier Guillaume (124 votes) and the Communist Eliane Assassi (18 votes). A voice has been on the UMP Philippe Marini, who was not a candidate. The former Minister of Labour, aged 65, has benefited from the withdrawal of the centrist François Zocchetto, who got 45 votes in the first round.
Gérard Larcher won handily Tuesday primary of his party against former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, backed by Nicolas Sarkozy. Senate President, elected for three years, is often presented as the second character of the Republic, to the extent that he acts the president in case of vacancy or impediment.
