Artificial heart: death of the second patient implanted – Le Figaro

The patient who had received a heart prosthesis there nine months died Saturday, said Libération today. The patient then has lived 9 months with an artificial heart, more than triple the first surgery, which had held 74 days. It is nevertheless died late Saturday afternoon, confirmed two days later the CARMAT company in a statement.

The man aged 69 was hospitalized Friday in Nantes, where he was grafted on 5 August, due to a “circulatory failure,” the group said. The surgical team found “a functional prosthesis drift” implying device malfunction but without giving more details. A new prosthesis was then implanted him but the patient died of postoperative complications, the statement said. Contacted by Le Figaro , one of the patient’s surgeons refused to say more, explaining that the company reserved the CARMAT communication on the death.

This death follows little revelation of a third location in Paris there three weeks. On this occasion, Prof. Daniel Duveau, a major two surgeons of the team ensured the April 28 to Le Figaro that the “second patient” was “really great”. Reacting to an article in Libération indicating that the patient was hospitalized, he explained: “Our patients are closely monitored medically, as of all heart transplant recipients. We see the patient [Nantes] every week and as it must conduct regular examinations or adjust its treatment, sometimes it is received in a day hospital. There is nothing abnormal or secret. “

Concentrated technology in a biological casing reduces the risk of clots, the CARMAT artificial heart is intended to offer an alternative to thousands of heart failure awaiting graft. Its marketing is conditioned by the results of clinical trials, the first phase (two are provided) includes 4 people. Only the terminally ill and without any hope of recovery can participate in these clinical trials. A fourth patient should be implemented “in a relatively short time,” asserted Prof. Duveau last week. He will then return to the Medicines Agency to assess, on the basis of the results if the second wave of tests on twenty patients will be allowed
