Migrants: London wants to create a “safety zone” for … – The World

The metal mesh supposed to prevent migrants from traveling to England from Calais, in France.

The British Interior Minister Theresa May announced in parliament Tuesday, July 14 the creation of a “New Area Port Safety (French) Calais for trucks from the United Kingdom, “ to prevent the intrusion of illegal immigrants in vehicles.

” This must transform the protection of trucks and their drivers by removing them from the road where they can be the target migrants “, said the minister, adding that the waiting area will accommodate up to 230 vehicles.

A spokesman for the British Ministry told AFP that this area would be created within the secure perimeter of the port of Calais in the north west of France. Questioned by AFP, the French prefecture of Pas-de-Calais has neither confirmed nor denied this announcement.

8000 crossings attempts stopped in a month

The Minister also said that more than 8,000 attempts of illegal immigrants to reach England were stopped by French and British authorities in less than a month, between June 21 and July 11. The previous official figures from January, brought 30,000 attempts in the last ten months.

Theresa May is also reneged on the agreement reached in September 2014 between France and the UK Management migratory pressure at Calais, which notably provided for a British contribution of € 15 million over three years to secure the port. “Since November 2014, we committed to invest £ 12 million, including 6 million has already been spent on strengthening the security of ports in northern France” , has she said.

“Eldorado” British

These statements were made in parallel with the announcement of new figures showing that hauliers have paid 6.6 million pounds ($ 9.3 million) in fines in the United Kingdom for transporting illegal immigrants between April 2014 and April 2015 a total increase of 2.4 million over one year.

The proximity of Britain attracts years in Calais, its nearest access point for the European continent, in search of illegal passage to what they see as the “Eldorado” British.

In late June, London also announced the strengthening of control illegal immigration to the British port of Dover. According to the last count in early July, the prefecture of Pas-de-Calais, about 3,000 migrants, mostly Eritreans, Ethiopians, Sudanese and Afghans seeking to reach England, were identified in the Calais region.
