The new tram Besancon , which opened Aug. 30, caused a first fatal accident less than a week after its commissioning. A man of 81 years, hit by a train Thursday, succumbed to his injuries Saturday. The victim, a native of Loire-Atlantique tourist, died at the hospital where she was transported in critical condition, told AFP the mayor (PS) of Besancon, Jean-Louis Fousseret. The old man had been hit by a train while crossing the track. A woman who was with him, the less seriously injured, was also hospitalized in shock.
“The tram is silent, so be vigilant”
“I am appalled by this tragedy, and I offer my condolences to the family” said Jean-Louis Fousseret. This accident is a reminder that “the tram is silent, we must be vigilant,” said the one. In a statement, the Urban Community of Greater Besançon has expressed its willingness “to continue its campaign of awareness and information on the safety rules to be respected and to adopt safe behaviors around the tram tracks” .
The new tram Besançon, billed as the “cheapest kilometer France” and equipped with oars adapted to the size of an average city, was inaugurated on August 30. It was built by the Spanish CAF (construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles). The new line follows a route of 14.5 km and connects 31 stations, from north-east to south-west of the city, passing through the station and the hospital.
