traveling the Pacific is determined goal of 70 scientists from around the world and getting ready on May 28 to board the schooner Tara. A breathtaking adventure where scientific research is king, this expedition will aim to study the Pacific biodiversity, chosen because it contains 40% of all coral reefs on earth.
A distance to be traveled in two years
set out from Lorient, Tara will cross 100,000 km during two years of navigation. An exploration with three primary objectives namely the study of the biodiversity of these reefs, the analysis of the impact of climate change and adaptation of corals and their current status. In the program, the harvest of 40 000 samples for 40 islands explored by way with 10 sites that will be studied in more depth. Tara sailboat thus surfs the waters of New Zealand, China, Panama Canal and the archipelago of Japan, an epic that will run for two years with the main protagonists 70 scientists from different disciplines.
Tara to attack fragile reefs
Threatened by global warming, the study of these reefs is vital for humanity, especially for those who live on the islands, but also for the diversity of species they support. Of abused reefs and subject to climate change raging on their health like ocean acidification impacting their growth and water temperature rise that causes bleaching of the corals. These alarming findings explain the increased importance of this expedition, knowing that 35% of coral reefs will disappear in 4 years or 10 years while 20% are already destroyed. The extinction of these is the result of various factors both humans as overfishing, pollution and population growth and other natural. This study will be crucial for the future of coral reefs.
