Prices in Paris are 9% higher than province – Les Echos

Life in Paris is more expensive than in the rest of France. The facts are known but figures released by INSEE on Thursday to measure the precise distance, depending on the types of expenditure, between the capital and its suburbs in the province. If a provincial household stood in the Paris region while keeping its lifestyle, its consumption budget increase of 9.2% (2015 figures).

About a third of the difference is explained by the cost of rent, higher by almost 50% for the Parisians, according to INSEE. If electricity rates and gas are uniform in France, services related to housing (household waste management, sanitation service, repair of the dwelling) are also more expensive in Paris, but the extra cost is limited to 6, 1%.

Doctor’s fees: + 12.2% in Paris

The housing is not the only position for which price differences are important. Health expenditure (before reimbursement by social security schemes and complementary health), including physician fees are higher by 12.2% in the Paris region from the province. . Differential is explained by more frequent excess fees in Ile-de-France

Finally, the price differences on hotels and other accommodations are also high: the the difference is 18%. More surprisingly, INSEE does not measure glaring difference in the prices of cafes and restaurants (only 5.4% in Paris).

Food

the differences are less marked in food (+ 6.4% in Paris). This gap explains INSEE regarding almost all food categories. It can be explained in particular by the trade margins that integrate a rendering important service, such as shop opening period, often extended to Paris and the regions. For buying furniture or household equipment, the gap is moderate (+ 4.2%) as the major national retailers practice generally uniform rates throughout the territory.

Overall, the price difference is rather low on goods (+ 3%) and more marked in services (15.6%). This is the weight of wages in production costs is higher for services. Now the average net hourly wage of a worker or employee is of the order of 8 to 10% higher in the Ile-de-France and the provinces.

The price differences are much more sensitive about the services on goods
