THE SCAN POLICY – Mediapart details the list of benefits that perceives Nicolas Sarkozy as a former president of the Republic: the state has reimbursed 1.6 million euros in personnel costs and 196,000 euros monthly rent.
Last December, several socialist deputies led by Yann Galut and Alexis Bachelay created controversy claiming that the new opposition leader Nicolas Sarkozy leaves the advantages it enjoys as a former president. Mediapart has revealed the invoice amount of these privileges to the public treasury. All former presidents enjoy the largesse of the Republic since the 1985 decision taken by the then Prime Minister Laurent Fabius. The cost of these expenses is estimated between 1.5 and 2 million euros a year per beneficiary. But this is the first time the invoice details made public.
Between May 2012 and December 2014 Mediapart reveals that the former tenant of the Elysee totally renewed the furniture. The replacement of office space, computer and telephone Park Street Miromesnil exceeds 55,000 euros. The state also pays rent for an amount of 196,092 euros per year, more than 16,000 euros per month for an area of 320 m2. Nicolas Sarkozy also benefits from the provision of a Citroen C6V6 HDI Exclusive, bought 44,140 euros after his defeat. The fuel bill is $ 4,046 per year and servicing to 5.301 euros
Another big item of expenditure. Remuneration of staff made available to the former president. It includes the salaries of five staff being available as well as those of five contract consultants paid between 5,247 euros and 7,020 euros net per month. We find among these advisors half-sister Carla Bruni, wife of Nicolas Sarkozy: Consuelo Remmert holds the position of “diplomatic advisor,” and would be responsible as Mediapart to organize the famous conferences paid the former president gives worldwide. This personal cost would total 1.6 million euros for two and a half depending on the investigation site.
While some voices left to question the relevance maintaining such spending in times of crisis, a politician who took over leading functions Nicolas Sarkozy’s entourage denied any mix of genres. Thursday, January 15, Véronique Waché, Communications Advisor of the head of the opposition, assured Mediapart that the entire organization around it was doubled, so that the costs for the former President do not have the head of the UMP.
