police vehicle on fire: a sixth suspect arrested – Le Figaro

A sixth suspect was arrested Wednesday night in Paris in the investigation of the attack on a police car on fire May 18 by thugs while two officers were on board. Five suspects already indicted in this case for attempted manslaughter.

A 39-year French suspected of involvement in attack on a police vehicle, whose images were shot in loop and caused a strong indignation, was taken into custody Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter. The arrest took place near the Place de la Nation on Wednesday evening after he attended a rally in the twelfth arrondissement of Paris.

Five suspects already indicted in this case for attempted manslaughter on police, destruction and violence by organized gangs. Among them, Antonin B., 21, his younger brother Angel, 18, and an American of 27 years were taken into custody. Two other suspects, Bryan, 19, and Leandro, 32, who would be less directly involved, were released under court supervision. Close to some of the anti-fascist movement, they acknowledged their presence at the scene but deny having taken part in the violence of which they are accused. The investigation will determine responsibilities.

The role of each suspect is undetermined

While the suspects were identified through a witness presented as anonymous, the latter is in need out to be that of an undercover police officer on site, his name on a report by mistake. Lawyers for indicted denounce unfair investigation and without evidence. “Police who were victims, police are investigating a police officer witness …” regretted early June Me Antoine Comte, a lawyer Leandro, a former postman in training to become a special education teacher, who refutes any act of violence. “This case is extremely little transparent and highly ambiguous,” he complained. To date, none of them is believed to have launched the smoke.

The facts took place near the Republic Square, where a banned demonstration against-degenerated sidelines of an unprecedented gathering of the police against the “anti-hate cops.” On the images, several hooded people attacked the car turns, one breaking a window, another striking a policeman inside, yet another smashing the back window with a metal pole. Finally, someone had thrown a smoke lit in the car, causing a fire and forcing the officers to get out.

The day of the facts, the Commissioner of Police Michel Cadot had denounced an attack “particularly shocking” “marks an escalation in the free and brutal violence” against law enforcement. Both officers affected by this attack have also been awarded the gold medal of the Beauvau up internal security, in the presence of François Hollande.
