THE CONTROVERSY – According to a survey, 73% of French say they support a bid for Paris the Olympic Games of 2024. A good idea?

According to a CSA poll for Direct Matin , nearly 3/4 of the French would support the Paris bid for the Olympics in 2024. When asked Tuesday morning on BFM TV, the mayor the capital, Anne Hidalgo, showed some envy on this. “I’m not saying yes or no on a whim. Today, my inclination, my heart is more on sports and games. I would really want. At the same time, I say that I do not want not do anything, “she said

& gt;. & gt; Is the Paris bid for the 2024 Olympics a good idea? The official submission of applications is September. Until then, here are the arguments for both sides:

THE CASE FOR

infrastructures to renovate and develop. In the coming years, France will organize several international sporting competitions such as the European Football Championship in 2016 or Handball World Championships in 2017. All these events will help renovate existing sports facilities . In 2015, the Palais Omnisports Paris Bercy become the “Bercy Arena” with a new capacity of 21,000 spectators. For Euro 2016, the Stade de France should, too, undergo some renovations. One can also imagine that Roland Garros will undergo a facelift next decade. Another advantage transportation. The plan of the selected sites will fit in the scheme of transportation of Greater Paris which funding is acquired and has begun to emerge, with or without the Olympics. If Paris had her case, the steering committee will have to rely on that.

A source of motivation for high performance sport. All traffic athletes dream. Olympic champion in the pole vault in 2012, Lavillenie wants to end his career on a title in Paris in 2024. There are also those who dream of such a bid to boost their careers. If Paris were to host the Olympic Games, new loans would assist sports that sorely lacking today grants

.

The economic benefits. This is obviously a double-edged argument. The cost (we will discuss below) must be balanced with the return on investment. In terms of job creation, housing, Olympic campaign could even be beneficial as the firm of Microeconomix

The alternating continents 2008:.. Beijing ( Asia). 2012: London (Europe). 2016: Rio (America). 2020: Tokyo (Asia). And in 2024? This will obviously not the first argument advanced by the French Committee of International Sport (CFSI), but it will consider. If Madrid had won the Games in 2020, Paris would not have even imagined one second present its case in 2024.

100 years without games. In 2012, Paris was much advanced this argument. Since 1924, France has not hosted an Olympiad. In 2024, Paris will celebrate 100 years of the last Olympics on home soil. A “chord” weapon that may well weigh in the balance.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST

The high cost. It is always the first argument advanced by those who do not want a French bid. If we put aside the astronomical budgets for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 (31 billion euros), the London Olympics (11 billion), or the Olympics in Sochi (36 billion euros), the budget Olympics is relatively fixed. Priced between 4 and 5 billion euros by the city of Paris, the cost of the Games is estimated at less than € 4 billion in the report of CFSI.

A very tough competition While France still hesitates, Germany, states. UNite and Italy have already taken the plunge and announced their bid to host the Olympics 2024. Preferred Washington, Los Angeles and San Francisco by the US Olympic Committee, Boston has clearly benefited from the new IOC recommendations advocating Games human scale. The United States has retained a lot of lessons from the failure of Chicago’s bid for the Olympics in 2016. Another major adversary Rome. The Italian city put on a low-cost application in times of crisis and can count on the support of the Vatican, which recently offered to host one or several events. Finally, if Germany still hesitating between Berlin and Hamburg, it could be seriously handicapped by the IOC President (Thomas Bach elected in 2013, ed ). Can a German city to be elected by an Olympic institution headed by a German?

The World Expo one year later . Much cheaper than Olympic bid, the organization of the World Expo 2025 could be quite a thorn in the side of Paris. Especially as the Prime Minister Manuel Valls recently support this organization. But does this mean a problem. In 2008, Beijing organized the Games. Two years later, Shanghai hosted the World Expo

2012 The failure still in everyone’s mind It would not be very lucid not to think about it. Numerous sporting tricolor still have much memory failure. For the 2012 Olympics, many athletes had particularly regretted the application to be embodied by politicians. An error not to reproduce …
